Mattress removal is easier to scope when the team knows the size, quantity, floor and route out. Include the box spring, foundation, adjustable base, headboard and frame in the item list. A “bed” can mean one light mattress or several heavy components.

Identify every bed component

Inspect seams and disclose pest concerns

Look along mattress seams, the box spring, bed frame, headboard and nearby baseboards. Texas DSHS notes that bed bugs often hide in these areas and can be transported in furniture. If you see signs of an infestation, stop moving items through the building and contact apartment management and a licensed pest-control operator.

Tell the removal service before the appointment. A surprise disclosure at the door can put workers, the truck and other customers’ property at risk. Do not donate or give away an infested mattress.

Wrap only when the handling plan calls for it

A mattress bag can protect hallways and keep the surface contained, but a loose sheet of plastic can create poor grips and trip hazards. Use a bag sized for the mattress, close it fully and keep handles or safe grip points available. If the mattress is wet, contaminated or infested, ask the crew or pest professional how it should be contained before moving it.

Before wrapping

Remove all sheets, pads, protectors and stored items.
Photograph the mattress and route out.
Check the building’s disposal and elevator rules.
Confirm whether the removal service requires a bag.
Keep the mattress inside the unit until the pickup window unless management approves another location.

Prepare the room and route on pickup day

Move small furniture, lamps, cords and rugs away from the bed. Clear doors and turns, but keep the building’s emergency exits open. Reserve the elevator or loading area if required. Secure pets away from the route.

Do not try to fold an innerspring mattress or carry a large mattress alone down stairs. Its size can block your view and catch wind outdoors. Let the crew choose the carrying orientation after they inspect the route.
